Fontsanta Hotel Thermal Spa & Wellness

The only thermal spring hotel in the Balearic Islands, in the protected natural area of Es Trenc in Campos, southeastern Mallorca, where water declared of public utility since 1869 and known since Roman times emerges from underground with a mineral concentration of 25.34 grams per litre, where a balneario that opened in 1845 now operates as a five-star adults-only hotel, and where the thermal spa, the Mediterranean landscape and the silence of Es Salobrar de Campos give the stay a restorative depth that the island’s other luxury properties cannot offer.

About

The thermal spring at Fontsanta has its own mythology. According to local legend, its healing properties were discovered during an ancient epidemic devastating Mallorca’s pig population, when the animals that rolled in the waters of this zone survived. Whether or not the legend is accurate, it points to something real: the water here has been understood as therapeutic for a very long time. Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, the nineteenth-century naturalist who documented the Balearic Islands with meticulous care, wrote about these waters among his accounts of Mallorcan life.

The springs were formally studied in the early nineteenth century, when the physician Juan Andrés Nieto Samaniego examined their chemical composition and therapeutic properties, arguing for the creation of a centre to benefit from the water’s medicinal virtues. In 1845 the first balneario building opened, almost identical to the current structure. The waters were declared of public utility in 1869. The property passed into private hands in 1916, and the family that has owned it since has maintained the thermal tradition while transforming the building into a five-star adults-only hotel that opened in its current form in 2012.

The water that emerges from the subsoil acquires its mineral richness as it rises through shallow aquifers, carrying elements that cannot be artificially reproduced. With a mineral concentration of 25.34 grams per litre, predominantly sodium chloride with significant concentrations of magnesium, calcium, sulphur, fluoride and potassium, the water is chemically specific to this geological formation and carries therapeutic properties that external classification confirms but that the body recognises without needing to know the mineral breakdown.

The thermal spa uses these waters as the foundation of every treatment and programme. An immersion zone and a toning zone structure the hydrotherapy experience. Five treatment cabins, including a double cabin for duo treatments, a manicure and pedicure cabin and individual massage and body treatment cabins, extend the thermal encounter into bodywork, facials and beauty treatments, each built around the hydrothermal technique that gives every service its particular character.

The setting completes the offer. Fontsanta sits within the protected natural area of Es Trenc, one of Mallorca’s least developed coastal zones, adjacent to Es Salobrar de Campos, a salt lagoon of ecological importance and atmospheric intensity. The hotel is adults-only. The quality of light and silence available here, between the thermal water and the protected Mallorcan countryside, is not constructed by design but simply what this place is.

Highlights

The singularity of Fontsanta is geological and historical, not programmatic. The only thermal spring in the Balearic Islands, known since Roman times, formally studied in the nineteenth century, declared of public utility in 1869, opening as a balneario in 1845: this is a place whose therapeutic identity is embedded in its physical reality rather than assembled from wellness industry components. The 25.34 grams per litre mineral concentration, the adjacent protected natural landscape of Es Trenc and Es Salobrar, and the adults-only character of the stay make this one of the most genuinely distinctive thermal experiences available on any Spanish Mediterranean island.

Fontsanta is what it is because of what is under the ground: a thermal spring that has been known since the Romans, declared of public utility since 1869, whose water carries 25 grams of mineral per litre and rises without chemical intervention from the geology of this corner of Mallorca. Everything else, the balneario building, the five-star hotel, the treatment cabins, the toning zone, the quiet of Es Trenc outside the window, is organised around the simple fact that the water here does something, and has been doing it for a very long time.
