In the highland plateau of Sengokuhara, where Hakone’s volcanic history rises to the surface in milky-white thermal waters fed by two springs at different temperatures, KAI Sengokuhara offers each of its sixteen rooms a private outdoor bath on the terrace and, at night, a water garden that transforms into an illuminated artwork beside the bath. The kaiseki kitchen draws its presentation language from the volcanic Owakudani valley nearby, and the rooms hold works made by artists who stayed in this house before the guest who arrives today. It is a ryokan built around the idea that creative attention and thermal water belong in the same space, and in this corner of Hakone, that argument is made with quiet conviction.

Highlights
At KAI Sengokuhara, the rooms feature the artworks created by twelve artists who invited from around the world to serve as artists in residence. During their stay, the artists immerse themselves in the location to create artworks that are then displayed in the ryokan's rooms. Each artist offers a different perspective of Sengokuhara that enhances the ryokan's sense of place.
Guests are served Japanese cuisine that highlights the aromas and other qualities of the local seafood and vegetables, reflecting the ryokan's location in the mountains and proximity to the ocean. Dishes and dishware are combined in ways both beautiful and playful, as befitting an art-oriented ryokan.
