Healing Depth 1 Restore by Healing Guide

On Benguerra Island fourteen kilometres off the coast of Mozambique, where the Bazaruto Archipelago forms one of the last intact marine ecosystems on the eastern seaboard of Africa, a 300-hectare sanctuary built from 3D-printed coral-inspired architecture and the handcraft of local island artisans holds eleven residences so private that each has its own beach. The Natural Wellness Center draws from Ayurvedic tradition and TCM, uses an Iyashi dome infrared sauna, and structures treatments around the five natural elements. The Indian Ocean does the rest, which at this latitude and in this silence is not a small contribution.

Healing in Mozambique

Kisawa Sanctuary

Kisawa Sanctuary is an ultra-luxury private island resort on Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique, situated fourteen kilometres off the mainland coast within a national marine park. Spread across 300 hectares of forest, beach, and sand dunes, the property combines eleven private residences with a stand-alone Natural Wellness Center, a Resort to Research ecological programme, and a founding philosophy of bringing wilderness and wellbeing together without one diminishing the other.

About

The physical reality of Kisawa Sanctuary begins with the island itself. Benguerra is not a resort island in any conventional sense. There are no paved roads, no running water or electricity outside the resort, and a population of local fishermen and village communities whose way of life the property has committed to engaging rather than bypassing. The construction of Kisawa employed more than half the island’s population at its peak, and the design process involved skilled artisans from Benguerra alongside patented 3D printing technology that allowed the architecture to reference the organic forms of coral, dunes, and coastal vegetation without imposing conventional built form on the landscape. The resulting structures are genuinely unlike anything else in African hospitality.

Eleven residences, each comprising one, two, or three private bungalows within their own one-acre compound, offer maximum privacy and minimum disturbance. Each has its own infinity pool and private beach access. The spatial logic is one of radical individual immersion: there is no need to share any part of the landscape with other guests if that is not desired. The Kisawa Residence, the property’s most exclusive configuration, extends this privacy to its maximum expression.

The Natural Wellness Center is a stand-alone thatched building housing the property’s integrated healing philosophy. Treatments are led by specialists in Ayurvedic healing and Traditional Chinese Medicine and structured around the five natural elements of Air, Fire, Water, Space, and Earth. A personalised treatment plan, developed through an individual consultation with the Head of Wellbeing, shapes the therapeutic dimension of each stay. The treatment menu includes Deep Tissue Massage, Oya Oya Oil Massage, the signature Aromatherapy Ritual, Hot Stone Therapy, and access to the Japanese Iyashi Dome infrared sauna. Holistic healing rituals include Sriwijaya Sound Healing, Hatha Yoga, Surya Namaskar, Pranayama, and Qi Gong. Treatments are available either in the NWC or in the privacy of the guest’s own residence.

The Resort to Research programme is the most intellectually distinctive element of the Kisawa offering. Guests are invited to participate in active marine conservation and scientific research projects, including guided marine wildlife observation, whale watching during the humpback season from July to October, and ecological excursions through the national marine park. A permaculture garden supplies the kitchen, and a network of farmers and fishermen within 300 kilometres of the sanctuary provides the culinary raw material for a kitchen that produces its own jams, pickles, charcuterie, and cheese.
