Hvar is not simply a beautiful Croatian island. It is, in a specific and documented sense, one of the birthplaces of health tourism in Europe. In 1868, when the concept of organised leisure travel was still nascent, the Hvar Health Society established on the basis of medical research that nowhere was better than this island for guests suffering from chest illnesses. The island provided mild climate, clean air, access to the sea, and the therapeutic presence of wild plant species growing on its hillsides and in its valleys. Organised tourism in Croatia began not as sightseeing but as health recuperation. That founding logic is still present in the landscape: more than 600 wild medicinal, aromatic and honey plant species grow on Hvar, 120 of which are traditionally used in folk medicine, food preparation, oils and spirits.

Maslina Resort occupies a private bay, Uvala Maslinica, on Hvar’s northwest coast near Stari Grad, the island’s oldest town, founded by Greek settlers in 384 BC as Pharos. The resort was built with a philosophical intention that its founders describe as a love letter to the Mediterranean: natural and organic materials, contemporary design that reflects rather than ignores its surroundings, family-friendly infrastructure and a wellness offering named Pharomatiq in deliberate tribute both to the ancient Pharos and to the aromatic healing plants that make the island’s landscape what it is.

The Pharomatiq Wellness programme is organised around four pathways rather than a fixed menu of treatments. Purify addresses detoxification and the elimination of physical and mental toxins. Vitality works with energy, balance and the holistic state of physical, mental and emotional aliveness. Longevity focuses on sustainable health practices and mindful lifestyle choices aimed at an extended and fulfilling healthspan. Serenity addresses calm, sleep and the tranquil harmonisation of a stressed nervous system. Within each pathway, guests choose from signature treatments developed specifically for Maslina, traditional massages, Biologique Recherche facial protocols and a movement and mindfulness programme that includes Hatha, Vinyasa Flow and Ashtanga yoga, personal training, holistic therapies drawing on music, movement and energetic work, and biomarker assessment through Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis combined with Postural and Movement Assessment.

The fitness space uses Nordh and Matrix equipment, with each Nordh piece handcrafted from natural materials in keeping with the resort’s Mindful Luxury philosophy. The connection between the spa and the surrounding landscape is structural rather than atmospheric: the treatments use Hvar’s botanical heritage not as a branding element but as a clinical resource, working with the same plants whose medicinal properties have been in documented use on this island for a century and a half.
