Healing Depth 1 Restore by Healing Guide

Deep in the forested mountain valleys of Central Portugal, the Winter family has spent nearly two decades quietly restoring four ancient Xisto stone houses into one of the world’s most genuinely inhabitable retreat spaces. Yoga in a shala floating above the landscape, cascading natural river pools, forest bathing paths, Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments, nourishing plant-based meals from the property’s own garden, and the particular silence of a valley where time moves differently from anywhere else — Vale de Moses is the kind of place that feels less like a retreat destination and more like a homecoming.

Healing in Portugal

Vale de Moses

Vale de Moses is a family-run yoga retreat and ecological restoration project in Oleiros, in the mountains of Central Portugal, situated in the forested valleys of the Castelo Branco district. Set around four restored Xisto stone farmhouses, the property has been developed since 2007 as both a retreat destination and a living demonstration of relationship between people, place, and the more-than-human world.

About

The story of Vale de Moses is inseparable from the decision of a family to stop moving and begin belonging. Arriving in September 2007, six months into a year’s journey through Southern Europe, they found a valley in Central Portugal and understood it as home. What followed was nearly two decades of work: restoring four Xisto stone farmhouses with natural materials (clay, lime, stone, wood) in the old local Portuguese building tradition, replanting the land, building connections with the surrounding community in Oleiros, and developing a retreat programme rooted in the specific intelligence of the place rather than imported from elsewhere.

The physical environment is the primary therapeutic element. The property sits in a forest valley where multiple waterfalls feed natural river pools, where moss-lined paths lead to ancient flour mills, where the soundscape is composed entirely of water, birdsong, and the wind moving through the canopy. The yoga shala is suspended above the landscape on a timber platform, offering a practice space that is neither indoors nor outdoors but somewhere between. The bamboo ceremonial fire pit house provides a gathering space for evening story-sharing. The bell tents sit beneath strawberry fruit trees. Every spatial decision at Vale de Moses reflects the same conviction: that the body heals most readily when it is fully inside a living ecosystem rather than adjacent to one.

The daily rhythm is structured around this understanding. Mornings begin in silence, with herbal teas and fruit available from 7:30 as an invitation to quietness before the group programme begins. Yoga, movement, or other practices with visiting facilitators run through the morning. Free time in the forest from 11:00 to 14:00 is described by the property as where the magic happens, an explicit acknowledgement that integration requires unstructured time. Lunch is the largest meal, vegetarian and usually vegan, prepared with local and seasonal produce, timed to align with the ayurvedic principle of digestive fire at its peak. Rest follows. Afternoon programme, dinner, and the night sky complete the day.

Healing treatments are grounded in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Tui Na deep tissue massage is included with each stay. Acupuncture is available as an additional treatment, examining physiological and psychological health as a whole and addressing patterns of disharmony. Health consultations are available for guests seeking deeper individual guidance. The food philosophy treats eating as medicine: three meals daily prepared with love, nutritious and delicious, supporting the microbiome and the practice of yoga through the quality of what the body receives.

The retreat programme operates through visiting facilitators and resident hosts, covering yoga, mindfulness, walking, movement, breathwork, Pilates, Forrest Yoga, and arts-based retreats across an annual calendar. The property can also be hired in its entirety by facilitators wishing to bring their own groups.
